Anyone Used or Know Much About P90X?

I was just wondering if anyone had used or know someone who has used the P90X system. I was thinking about getting the system but wanted to get some realistic feedback on it's results and/or benefits. I'd also like to know what else you have to buy in order to do the routines. Some reviews I've read say that you need a chin-up bar while others say that you don't.

Help?

I did the 90 day program.

It is centered around various types of push ups, and pull ups. I liked it a lot. It would have been a lot better if I had followed the diet better, and did it in the evening. I had to get up so early to do it (the workouts take an hour, and it takes me a long time to get warmed up, I’m also not a morning person). The nice thing about it is you don’t get too bored doing it because you switch the workouts so much. I ended up gaining chest, shoulder and arm size. Some people are annoyed by Tony, but I found him to be funny, and motivating. He also reminds you of proper technique with every move. So I’d say, if you are looking to get into great shape, then do it. If you want to gain a lot of muscle size, then try something else. I’ll be happy to answer any specifics that you would like to know.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

well my main question was...

I’ve read some other places that the system is designed for someone who’s already in shape and simply looking to tone down and that if you’re not in shape (ie 20 or more pounds overweight), you’d be better served starting with an easier system and working your way up to P90X. Would you agree with that?

Also, is this a system that you could use again or is it a one time, 90 day deal that you’d have to try and resell after three months?

There are some minimum requirements.

Just from the top of my head I’d say you should be able to do at least 3 pull ups, and 15 or so push ups. You can tailor it to your own needs. You can go light and tone down, or go heavy and bulk up (as long as you are not a heavy lifter right now). It has a lot of core work, and a killer yoga workout that helped my back problems 100%. If you have done nothing but sit on a couch, and eat for years, then yes, start with something easier and work your way up. But if you are mildly active, I would say you would be fine. I would think that it would kick just about anyones butt depending on how much intensity you put into it. The program tells you what you can do after the 90 days to maintain. I have had it for two years. I use it as a new years resolution workout. I kind of stop moving during Thanksgiving and Christmas. So for the last two years, on Jan. 1st I start P90x, do the 90 days, then I go onto other workouts when it’s over (around spring so I can go outside to run, bike, etc). It’s great for cold weather, when you need to be indoors. You also need very little space, or equipment. I really like it. A lot of the real serious Arnold type bodybuilders don’t like it because it doesn’t bulk your chest, and legs like they like. You just can’t add that kind of weight to push ups and one legged squats. I like it because it gets you in shape quickly.

thanks guys

Sounds like I should easily meet the minimum. Thanks for the info.

Another good workout to try

after the P90X is One on One with Tony Horton (the creator of P90X). This workout is definitely tougher but I love it and it still doesn’t require a whole lot of space, just a pull up bar, some weights, and the attitude to do it.

I don't know....

I have known people that were overweight or not in the greatest shape have done this and did fine at it. Heck I was about 30-40 pounds overweight when I started. Five months later I am in the best shape of my life.

Good for you!

You must have followed the diet real well too. That was my weakness.

Well....

I cut out candy (or most kinds of sweets) and soda. Cutting those out were huge. Everything else I kind of just kept the same, except I tried to cut out red meats more. I still have somewhat of a tummy but that is all I have left. I still have about 10 pounds to go….those 10 pounds have been the hardest. Your right though the diet is hard to maintain.

Those last ten pounds are the hardest.

I have been working on those for a few years now. It’s just too easy to get back on the ice cream, or soda, or micro brew train again.

I got it about 3 months ago.

It’s a pretty good program, but I’m not sure if it works nearly as good as advertised, since they obviously show the people with whom it had the most effect on anyways.

I would recommend that you be in decent cardiovascular shape and to be able to do a few pullups or pushups at first. Otherwise, you’re going to have to do a lot of knee pushups, and do pullups with a chair (or get the bands).

I lost 7 pounds in the first month, but then gained 5 back, though a lot of that might’ve been the ice cream and cereal I ate late at night, though in my defense, the program makes you fairly tired, and when I’m tired, I eat.

Summary: For the price, it’s a lot better than a gym, since most people sit around doing nothing at a gym, or waiting for a machine to use, this is just like bang bang bang, one exercise after another.

Also acceptable, trade for Patrick Chung and draft Ed Wang so everyone can Wang Chung tonight.

Agree.

I only lost about 10 pounds, but I went down two notches on my belt. I by no means look like the people on the commercial, but I got into great shape. I could tell when I went to play basketball, and do yard work. I am also with you on the diet part. I think I would have seen much better results if I followed the P90X diet. It’s hard to follow a diet when you have three kids, and a wife that is a GREAT cook. But no one made me put the fork to my mouth!
