Need some advice

I'm trying to max out my push-ups and sit-ups for a military PT test. I had great progress in my first month, but I seem to have hit a plateau. I"ve got 7 weeks to add about 20% more to my scores. I am a personal trainer but training myself has always been more difficult than training my clients. Any suggestions on some training methods to shake things up would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there,

There are a variety of things you can try. You can start a program of your own like these maybe:

Pick a rep range that you can do pushups with perfect form. Say you can do 10 perfect pushups. Do 3 sets of those pushups with a shoulder width stance. Then follow it up with maybe 3 sets of close stance pushups of 10 reps and then do 3 sets of wide stance pushups of 10 reps. That could be a nightly workout for a week and then max out your pushups for one session at the end of the week.

You could add flat bench press and other variations of it but stay in a high rep range. This idea would increase your muscular endurance as well as improve strength. You’re not trying to bulk up here though.

I would do the same with improving your situps. Do variations of situps in the same fashion as I said about pushups.

This couldn’t hurt…then eventually you’ll find what works best for your body type and go with it. Good luck
